The AP (6/16) reports California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones is asking the Justice Department not to approve the merger of Anthem Inc. and Cigna Corp. According to Jones, the $54 billion “merger is anti-competitive and will harm California consumers and businesses.”
The Los Angeles Times (6/16, Petersen) quotes Jones as saying, “When it comes to the Anthem and Cigna merger, bigger is not better for California’s consumers.”
Bloomberg News (6/16, Tracer) reports that although Jones lacks the “legal authority to block the merger, his opposition, plus a 22-page letter he sent to the US Justice Department, adds an influential voice from nation’s most populous state.”
